AAUW Reacts to 2024 National Election Results
“The election results are extremely sobering, especially on the heels of a hyperpartisan, gridlocked Congress. AAUW is committed to holding all elected officials accountable about women’s rights, bodily autonomy, and access to education and economic opportunity, particularly for women of color.” AAUW CEO Gloria Blackwell, AAUW press release, November 4, 2024
“AAUW-WA is a nonpartisan organization focused on issues that matter to our members and align with our mission: ‘to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.’ We believe that democratic participation in governance and equal rights, benefits, and opportunities in all institutions of society— economic, social, educational, health, and political—are fundamental to women’s empowerment and public well-being.” (AAUW-WA President Emily Hitchens)

Title IX
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational programs or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”
Title IX is not just about sports. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, protecting staff and students in any educational institution or program that receives federal funds.

ERA, Equal Rights Amendment
Washington State has an Equal Rights Amendment (Washington Constitution article XXXI, §1, 1972) that covers women in our state. But once you step outside our state, you do not have the same legal protections that men have.

Women’s Health
Women’s Health is an issue that AAUW-WA members care deeply about. Our advocacy for women’s health is closely connected to our advocacy for equity in education and economic security. And it encompasses more than support for reproductive rights.
