01-24-2023 Online Branch Event

Please join the AAUW Washington Online Branch for a VIRTUAL panel discussion on January 24, 2023, at Seattle time zone 8:00 -9:30am.

In honor of US Mother’s Day in May 2022, the Pew Research Center coalesced data around working moms that validated much of what many working moms already knew – the pandemic exacerbated an already difficult balancing act of juggling family, career, and life. However, this data was collected in the US. What about in other countries? How did ongoing challenges for working mothers collide with new pandemic hurdles – was it a perfect storm, or do other national and cultural contexts provide different mechanisms to support mothers?

The Panel will explore perspectives of working mothers across the globe, reaching across cultures, borders, and sectors, to understand how policy, family dynamics, societal expectations, and socioeconomic factors present both challenges and opportunities to achieving gender parity in the workplace.

Our panelists include.

  • Christine Condo, Executive Director, Sustainable Growers, Kigali, Rwanda
  • Nesrine Halima, Senior Director, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Clients & Markets, PwC, Dubai, UAE
  • Turid Elisabeth Solvang, Founder & CEO, FutureBoards AS; Member of Expert Advisory Boards, Bords Impact Forum, Oslo, Norway
  • Mariana Costa Checa, Founder & CEO, Laboratoria, Lima, Peru

Please register for the virtual Panel discussion at this LINK. A zoom link will be issued with a meeting notice upon registration. The Panel Discussion will be RECORDED with the Link shared upon request, as well as via AAUW WA Online Web Site.

The Science of Mother’s Milk with Dr. Katie Hinde

Saturday, January 21st, 10am-Noon ZOOM

Did you know mother’s milk is older than dinosaurs? Or that milk composition is highly variable across mammalian species? Or that the biological recipe of milk differs for sons and daughters? Hinde is a well-known speaker, scientist and advocate investigating the hormones, food and medicine contained within mother’s milk.

In 2011 Hinde began the popular science blog Mammals Suck … Milk!, http://mammalssuck.blogspot.com/  and has an interesting Ted Talk.  https://www.ted.com/talks/katie_hinde_what_we_don_t_know_about_mother_s_milk

Currently, Hinde is an Associate Professor of Evolutionary Biology and Senior Sustainability Scientist at Arizona State University, where she researches lactation.

She is from Seattle where she was part of the Running Start and College Transfer program and attended Seattle Central. She earned a BA at the University of Washington in 1999 and her PhD in 2008 from UCLA.
